Vancouver woman named bartender of the year in Mexico City

A Vancouver woman has been named the world’s best bartender, adding more evidence that Vancouver is becoming one of the planet’s top cocktail cities.

Kaitlyn Stewart, the bar manager at Royal Dinette on Dunsmuir Street, took top honours at the World Class Bartender of the Year competition in Mexico City this week.

Stewart is the third Vancouver bartender to represent Canada at the event in the past four years. Vancouverites Grant Sceney and Lauren Mote took home top national honours in 2014 and 2015, respectively, before finishing sixth and 12th in the international competition.

“It’s clear now that Vancouver’s cocktail scene is full of energetic, creative, passionate, hospitable bartenders and this is being recognized not just within Canada, but globally,” Sceney told the Westender in June, after Stewart was crowned the Canadian bartender of the year, winning entrance into the international competition.

It’s even clearer now that Stewart has taken home the top prize, beating out 55 competitors who were finalists from regional events in 57 countries.

Stewart explained the lengthy and challenging road to Bartender of the Year in an interview with the Vancouver Sun in May.

“It’s a rigorous process consisting of several stages,” she said. “An online submission, Skype interview with past winners and judges, a regional competition with multiple challenges and then the national final with even more challenges.”

Those challenges included mixing it up with other bartenders — literally. To win, Stewart had to go head-to-head with her competitors in high-pressure battles to see who could create the best cocktails.

As the winner, she becomes an ambassador for the competition’s organizers and will travel the world to judge competitions.

“I’m so incredibly amazed and shocked to have been named the world’s best bartender,” Stewart said in a release. “I’ve loved every moment of this experience.”
